THE CLOAK OF MATARIKI

Unitec School of Architecture Year 2 Sculpture

About The Project.

For our studio project, our group spent six weeks designing and building a sculpture inspired by Matariki, which marks the Māori New Year and the rising of the Matariki star cluster. This time of year represents remembrance, reflection, and new beginnings. Through thoughtful planning, creative design, and hands-on work, we created a sculpture that captures the meaning and spirit of Matariki.

Our Sponsors

Thank you to our sponsors for their support. Marvel3D and Creality provided the 3D printers and materials used to create the Feather, enabling precise and efficient production. We also appreciate Unitec for offering the workspace that made this project possible.

The
FEATHERS

Visitors can interact with the space by stepping up into the sculpture. The cloak wraps around the individual, embodying the idea of wearing the cloak themselves. Furthermore, the 3D tiles will flutter in the wind, creating a sense of dynamism and motion.
3D printing enables the creation of detailed, customised feathers that replicate the layered appearance of a korowai, with variations in colour and size enhancing the flowing effect. Additionally, wood can serve as the base structure, while steel wire can provide structural support and intricate detailing.
